When was the last time you thought about your brakes? They aren't really a thought about item, although they have one of the most important jobs to do when it comes to your vehicle. They keep you and your precious cargo safe, as well as the other drivers on the road. If you can't remember the last time they were serviced, then it's probably a good time to do it.
A rule off thumb is to have them checked every 12,000 miles, or if it's been over a year. You don't want to wait until they are in bad shape, because that usually means it will cost more money to repair--prevention is the cheaper route to go. Luckily brakes don't normally just "go" and there are telltale signs that they need to be serviced. Squealing sounds, bad smells, longer stopping times, and a spongy feeling pedal are all good indications.
