Winter Driving Tips
Brought to you by Pearson Honda
It's officially winter, everyone! We know that this can be an extremely stressful time of year, especially for first time snow drivers. Our goal here at Pearson Honda is to make all of our customers as confident as possible, no matter what the weather is like. That's why we are dedicated to giving you some of the best winter driving tips around, in order to get you where you need to go as safely as possible. Even without getting into the nitty gritty of it, the first thing we recommend to everyone is to get their vehicle properly serviced, even before you hit the road this winter. At Pearson Honda, we have an impressive service center that features certified technicians that keep your Honda running the way it should. Keep reading down below for more tips!
Slow down
Even after your vehicle has been serviced, and it is running properly, you as the driver need to make sure that you are taking steps to stay safe. The very first thing we recommend, therefore, is to simply just slow down. Not only does this usually give more space between you and the vehicles in front of you, but it allows you to have more of a reaction time, should something occur, or should your vehicle start to slip. The slower you are able to go, the better of a chance you have of making the right decision quickly, and with plenty of time to spare. It's important to stay safe!
Be careful with accelerating
While you are driving slowly, it's important to never be accelerating too quickly, and in this case, decelerating quickly. The point here is that traction is the name of the game in the winter, especially when dealing with snow and ice. When you are able to actually slow down without slamming on the brakes, you are avoiding skidding across a slick surface where your tires may not be able to grip. This could lead to a chain reaction of events that you simply can't control beyond that. So, for everyone's safety, accelerate slowly, and brake slowly.
Check your route
If you are going on a trip that's longer than normal, or out of your usual range, it's important to plan and check your route ahead of time. This is especially important when it comes to the weather forecast. While weather is rapidly changing, you want to make sure that you are prepared for anything that could come your way so you are not caught off guard. Preparedness is one of the key factors in winter driving.
Emergency kit
The last tip we want to give out could be the most important. Everyone should be driving around with an emergency kit. This kit should include things like jumper cables, a flashlight, batteries, blankets, extra rations that don't expire, water, salt/sand, and a shovel. These different items could be incredibly useful if you find yourself in a tight situation, with no way to call for help.
